Empower had all the essentials of a consumer finance app, but they knew their customers needed more. Many were struggling with money stress, especially those living paycheck-to-paycheck, caught between unexpected expenses and their next payday. Traditional cash advances came with interest, late fees and credit requirements when they were already struggling. Empower knew there had to be a better way.

Customer research uncovered promising opportunities for experimentation, with Cash Advance emerging as the breakthrough solution. To support this initiative holistically, the project also included thoughtful iteration on both core and additional new features, plus a complete design system overhaul and brand refresh that gave Empower a modern feel.

Empower tested Cash Advance with an exclusive beta group first to see how well it would serve their customers' needs. The results spoke for themselves, and Cash Advance was soon rolled out as a core feature to all customers.
